2/3 Teacher
Melissa grew up in Vacaville, California and received her Bachelor's of Arts in International Studies from Pepperdine University and her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from San Jose State University. She brings experience as a former counselor, educational outreach coordinator and legal advocate to her teaching practice.
In 2008, Melissa began teaching first grade at a parent-participation program in San Jose. At the Indigo Program, she developed a strong passion for progressive education and all that it encompasses. She seeks to create a positive learning environment where individual and group growth is valued, the focus is on mastery, learning experiences are hands-on and authentic and responsibility is fostered through freedom and independence in a non-competitive environment.
Melissa also integrates relevant and meaningful service learning opportunities into her curriculum so that her students come to enjoy and value giving back in its many forms. She provides opportunities for her students to consider themselves in relation to their community and society with the hope that they will form their own definitions of social justice, and some day, seek them out as well.
Melissa is thrilled to bring her interests, energy and desire to create meaningful relationships to such a extraordinary learning community.
