| Spanish Teacher
Marie Moravia holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Spanish Literature from Universidad Interamericana of San German, Puerto Rico. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Washington of Seattle, Washington.
Upon completion of her master’s degree, Marie was hired by the Seattle Public Schools as a Spanish bilingual teacher. For six years she taught subject matter in Spanish to small groups of students, while the students were learning English as a second language. At the same school she also taught Spanish classes for English speaking students.
For the next eighteen years Marie taught at an urban public alternative school. The school adopted the Expeditionary Learning school reform model, and used a project based, thematic curriculum. In addition the school used a shared governance approach that included parents, teachers, and administrators in all program decisions. Parents were an integral part of Marie’s classroom, and contributed greatly to the enrichment of the curriculum.
“I am fluent in French, Spanish, and English, and aim to communicate my passion for languages to students. I believe that in today’s world, proficiency in a second language is a necessity for all young people. My experience has been that early exposure and relating second language acquisition to student based interests help children develop the confidence and enthusiasm to learn another language.”
