Korean Alphabet (Hangul) Day is a national Korean holiday celebrating the invention of Korean alphabets by King Sejong the Great 500 years ago.
Before Hangul, Koreans spoke in Korean, but borrowed classical Chinese letters to transcribe. Due to the fundamental differences between Korean and Chinese language, this practice was highly ineffective and left a large Korean population illiterate as learning classical Chinese was limited to only small group of elites.
Developed by King Sejong the Great and his group of scholars to educate the mass, Hangul not only captures the spoken Korean language perfectly, but it’s one of the world’s most logical and easy to learn written language. Going beyond Korea, Hangul also has been taught and adapted by other cultures lacking their own writing scripts to help preserve their languages.
Today, Korea is a highly educated country with 99% literacy rate, thanks in large part to the invention of Hangul.
