We are very excited to welcome Connie Sobczak, co-founder of The Body Positive (thebodypositive.org) to speak to DCS Parents on February 5th at 6-7:30pm. Connie was scheduled to provide a training to faculty at DCS, however there was a conflicting event and the training will no longer be taking place. In any case, we are still excited for her to come and speak to parents!

The Body Positive is a nonprofit organization that teaches people to listen to their bodies, learn and thrive. Their ultimate goal is to end the harmful consequences of negative body image: eating disorders, depression, anxiety, cutting, suicide, substance abuse, and relationship violence. They are especially concerned about poor body image in teens and young adults, which is why they have been training educators and student leaders for more than twenty years to create Body Positive programs in their schools and communities.

In 2018 they created The Body Positive Institute, their online platform that offers courses to teach The 5 Competencies of their Be Body Positive Model to individuals who wish to improve their relationship with their bodies. This year, they are excited to launch their brand new digital facilitator training for educators, student leaders, community activists, and treatment providers. This training licenses people to use their research-based Be Body Positive Curriculum and help the people in their lives who are suffering over their bodies.

More about Connie: Connie’s experience with an eating disorder in her teen years and the death of her sister Stephanie inspired her life’s work to help people live with more appreciation and love for their precious bodies. She founded The Body Positive in honor of her sister, and to ensure that her daughter Carmen and other children would grow up in a new world—one where people are free to focus on the things in life that really matter. Connie is the author of Embody: Learning to Love Your Unique Body (and quiet that critical voice!), her book in which she skillfully and lovingly reconnects readers to their essence and life force. She has been training Be Body Positive Facilitators for more than twenty years, and uses her creative skills to produce The Body Positive’s curricula, videos, digital courses, and trainings. Connie’s passion is watching the light that emerges when people recognize and embrace their magnificent, authentic selves.
