Home School
Discovery Homeschool Information
The Discovery Homeschool at the Falcon Campus is a hybrid program, with two days of in-person instruction by a credentialed teacher and three days of homeschool. This unique program allows for the flexibility of homeschooling, at the same time providing students with an enriching in-school experience. The days spent in class provide social interactions, friendships, and a sense of community among the students and parents alike. The days spent homeschooling allow your child to follow their personal passions and interests while fulfilling educational requirements in an open-ended manner.
Student-Centered
In keeping with our Discovery philosophy, we encourage students to be an active participant in their educational experience by identifying and pursuing projects that align with their interests and integrate core subjects. Together with your child, and using our philosophy and core values as a guide, we build a program that works for your family.
Project-Based
The in-classroom activities and student-planned field trips are integral components of both group and individual learning. In addition to the classroom experience, our homeschool classes go on monthly field trips, which include nature days in outdoor settings.
We use TERC for our math curriculum and share a wide range of resources for homeschool. Materials from our Common Core curriculum areas are available to families, and we continue to build a library of shared resources. We do not allocate funding for outside classes but are willing to consider purchasing materials that the teacher and families agree would be helpful. Shared materials are available for checkout and are returned for others to use. Parents are supported by meeting with the teacher once a month to review materials completed and plan for the following month.
Family Involvement
Discovery is a parent partnership school, therefore parents or another family member will help in the classroom about once a month and will drive on at least 7 field trips over the course of the school year. Through helping in the classroom and chaperoning on field trips, parents get the privilege of sharing the school experience with their children. These special experiences provide insight and perspective into the learning styles of their children and help support their homeschool journey.
Parents and family members are integral to our Homeschool community, and Discovery offers training to families in applying Thinking Maps and Positive Discipline in their approaches. All Discovery families are invited to participate and be part of planning school-wide community events, such as summer play dates, walkathons, and family
